Percutaneous sperm aspiration and testicular sperm extraction (PESA & TESE)
In cases of azoospermia (no sperm found in ejaculated semen), surgical sperm retrieval using PESA & TESE techniques can offer chance of using husband sperm in IVF/ICSI treatment. Surgical sperm retrieval may be a treatment option for men with an obstruction preventing sperm release, due to injury or infection, congenital absence of the vas, vasectomy and some cases of non-obstructive azoospermia The procedures are carried out under general anesthesia and only are outpatient basis. If enough sperm is retrieved, it is possible to freeze sperm for future use. The sperm obtained is consequently used to inject the eggs using ICSI.
